Whether it is for a passport, visa, exam form or ID card, you often need a "passport size" photo in digital form. You don't need a studio for the online version — just a clear phone photo and three free tools.
What does "passport size" mean?
| Use | Size | Pixels (at 300 dpi) |
|---|---|---|
| India passport, most Indian forms | 3.5 × 4.5 cm | 413 × 531 |
| UK, Schengen and most of Europe | 35 × 45 mm | 413 × 531 |
| US passport and visa | 2 × 2 inch | 600 × 600 |
For online forms, the exact pixel count usually matters less than the shape (ratio 7:9 for 3.5 × 4.5) and the file size limit in KB.
Step 1: Take the photo
- Stand in front of a plain, light wall, facing a window for even light.
- Ask someone to take the photo from about 1–1.5 metres away at eye level. Selfies distort the face.
- Neutral expression, mouth closed, both ears visible if possible, no cap, no dark glasses.
Step 2: Make the background white
If the wall isn't plain white, open the background remover, press Remove background, then pick White and download. It runs in your browser, so the photo stays private.
Step 3: Crop to 3.5 × 4.5 cm
- Open the image cropper and choose the Passport 35×45 preset.
- Drag the frame so the face is centred, with a little space above the head. The head (chin to top of hair) should fill roughly 70–80% of the height.
- Choose JPG and press Crop & download.
Step 4: Match the form's KB limit
Most portals want the photo between 20 KB and 100 KB. Open Compress Image to KB, choose Photo 350 × 450 px (3.5 × 4.5 cm) under Dimensions, pick your limit, and download.
Printing passport photos at home
Want prints? Place several copies on a 4 × 6 inch (10 × 15 cm) photo and print it at a photo shop, which usually costs much less than a studio session. At 300 dpi, a 4 × 6 print is 1200 × 1800 pixels and fits eight 3.5 × 4.5 cm photos.
Checklist before you upload
- Plain white or light background, no shadows behind the head
- Face straight to the camera, eyes open and clearly visible
- Photo is recent and in colour
- Correct ratio (3.5 × 4.5) and within the KB limit
- Saved as JPG
For an actual passport application, always follow the latest rules on the official passport website — some offices take the photo themselves at the appointment.
