Copy text from any picture
OCR (optical character recognition) reads the letters in a picture and turns them into text you can edit, search and paste. Use it to grab text from a screenshot, a photo of a notice board, a scanned letter, a printed bill or class notes. This tool uses the open-source Tesseract engine inside your browser, so even private documents stay on your device.
How to extract text from an image
- Drop an image above, choose a file, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V.
- Choose the language written in the image. For mixed Hindi and English, pick English + Hindi.
- Press Extract text. Edit the result if needed, then copy it or download a .txt file.
Get more accurate results
- Use a sharp, well-lit photo taken straight on, not at an angle.
- Crop away everything except the text with the image cropper.
- Printed text works much better than handwriting.
- Very small text? Enlarge the image to twice its size with the image resizer first.
Frequently asked questions
Is this image to text converter free?
Yes, with no limits on the number of images and no sign-up.
Can it read Hindi text?
Yes. Choose Hindi, or English + Hindi for mixed text. Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati and Urdu are available too.
Are my images uploaded?
No. The OCR engine runs in your browser. Only the language data file is downloaded, once, and your image never leaves your device.
Can it read handwriting?
Neat handwriting sometimes works, but the engine is designed for printed text, so expect mistakes with handwriting.
Why does the first scan take longer?
Your browser downloads the OCR engine and the language file (a few MB) the first time. Later scans in the same language are faster.
